About

V. Nazim Burke is a Grenadian Attorney-at-Law, Economist, Former University Lecturer, Former Politician and Consultant. Over the past 40 years, he has acquired extensive practical experience working in these various fields, as well as substantial leadership and managerial experience.

Apart from his many years of work experience in both Grenada and North America (Canada), he possesses significant knowledge and experience related to the challenges and imperatives of the other OECS and CARICOM Countries, in particular, and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in general.

Between 2008 and 2013, he served as Grenada’s Minister of Finance, Planning, Economy, Energy and Cooperatives; and as its Minister of Foreign Trade of Grenada between July 2008 and July 2009. In addition, he was a member of Grenada’s Parliament- both the  Upper and Lower Houses- for fifteen years- between 2003 and 2018. Between 2014 – 2018 he served as the political leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the party which now forms the Government of Grenada.

His extensive knowledge and experience in Law, Economics, International Development (including Development Finance), International Trade, Public Finance Management and Energy is combined with years of knowledge and practical experience in organizational leadership, management, policy development, parliamentary procedure and teaching and training.

He possesses a sound command of English- both written and spoken- and a basic working knowledge of Spanish. Public speaking and technical writing have featured prominently in his professional career. He is an experienced negotiator.

In recent years, he has developed a very keen interest in the issues of International Climate Policy (including Climate Finance) and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Supervised and guided the development of a National Energy Policy for Grenada and the implementation of a 10-year Energy Action Plan.
Negotiated with the European Union, World Bank and other Multilateral Agencies for financial and technical assistance and support for the energy sector and for access to the green funds mechanisms established to assist countries seeking to adopt adaptation and mitigation measures in relation to climate change.
Supervised Grenada’ entry into membership of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
Supervised and guided the drafting of a Geothermal Resources Development Bill for Grenada.
Led and Supervised Grenada's participation as a case study in: IRENA Handbook on Renewable Energy Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs).
Led and supervised the preparation of the GREENADA VISION 2030, under which Grenada committed to convert Grenada to the 100% use of renewable energy for electricity generation and for transport by 2030. GREENADA VISION 2030 was launched at the Rio+20 Conference (March – April, 2012).
